wlan.connect() wlan.isconnected() fails if run from inside a _thread

I have tried on firmwares:
WiPy-1.18.3
WiPy-1.18.2.r4
WiPy-1.18.2.r3
WiPy-1.20.0.rc13

is wlan not thread safe?
do I need to lock something before run isconnected or connect

the interface locks up and sometimes crashes with a reboot, freeze-up, or guru meditation error
the freeze-up is highly repeatable.
