LoRa Gateway



  • I'm interesting in LoRa.

    I understand that LoPy can be a node or a Gateway.
    [Question 1]
    If a LoPy is Gateway mode, how many nodes can be connected to the Gateway?

    [Question 2]
    I want to know commercial gateway products which are compatible with LoPy.

    Are you saying you do not want to use LoRaWAN? For a 100 devices industrial system I strongly advice to use LoRaWAN. For GW, there are many option, e.g. a Kerlink indor or outdoor, TEKTELIC PICO, etc. For Kelink IoT Station and iFemtocell you either buy SPN which is in embedded LoRaWAN network server, you can buy a MULTITECH CONDUIT. If you need a LoRaWAN server you can chose LORIOT or other cloed services. Plenty of options. But using 100 devices you need a real GW, I mean with SX1301 board which can receive uplink messages on 8 channels, 6 per channels (if DR is different) and can manage the devices.

    Do not use single channel SX127x based device as a gateway except you are a specialist of networks and you have our own, trusted protocol. But still you can not eliminate hardware limitations.

    [1] A LoPy as a gateway is pretty limited, in that it can serve a single channel only as a single data rate/Bandwidth setting. This makes it infeasible as general purpose gateway. For a specific application, where you can control all the nodes, this may work.
    The number of nodes a gateway can support depends on the percentage of time a single node would send and the probability of a collision, since only one node can be received at a time. If the nodes send at random times, this is just a matter of probabilty. if each node uses the channel for 1% of the time, then you'll have a 50% success probability at about 70 nodes. Nodes are not registered at the gateway, so there is no data space that may exceed.
    Note however, that any message pair that requires a downlink message can only be handled at a time for ONE node. That will affect the use of OTAA join for many nodes, besides the fact, that notes may be intructed by the net server to use channels which the LoPy gateway does not support. Using ABP is more robust then.
    So: if you plan to use many nodes, better use a full service gateway product.
    [2] LoPy nodes should work with any compliant gateway product. You should seen that mentioned in various places in this board.
