WiPy fails to flash

This is extremely basic, but I am running a WiPy. The device should be updated with our new firmware, I updated the device firmware via the Pycom firmware updater. It was successful. When flashed with new firmware via VC the device happily accepts and reboots
Upload done, resetting board...
From there on, it is just empty, the device does not do anything, I can flash the device with the same firmware again and repeat the above steps, but that is not what I am looking for. How can I reflash this device so it will work with a stable connection?
