Pysense / pytrack

I cannot see anything in the docs about the spots for soldering that is accessible from the bottom of the shields. What are they used for? I2C? GPIO?
Another question... Is there any particular reason that the pysense / pytrack has a PIC processor built into it? Why isnt the sensors just connected to the Lopy?

PIC should also be able to wake up the Pycom board from deepsleep for example if movement is detected by the accelerometer.
