Firmware updates and NVS

Upgrading the firmware to the current release seems to wipe the key value pairs I have in NVS. Is that expected behaviour on every firmware update ?

Just asking because I'll need to add specific code to deal with that when performing an over the air update. Perhaps writing out the NVS keys I care about to flash disk before updating ?
