upload problem

deepsleep doesn't cycle in repl mode so I tried to upload my little 3 line test program as main.py The >>> prompt vanished replaced by;
Uploading project (main folder)...
Not safe booting, disabled in settings

Reading file status
Failed to read project status, uploading all files
Creating dir blob-store
Creating dir compile-cache
Creating dir compile-cache/coffee
..........

this went on & on & on, I can't stop it with ctrl-c, what on earth is it doing? Eventually it ended with;
reating dir storage
[1/3650] Writing file blob-store/BLOB (899kb)
Hashcheck not performed, file is > 500kb
Upload done, resetting board...
