Direct LoPY-to-LoPY comms

I have need to ssh between two distant computers. Is there a way to use two LoPY's to do this, without dependency upon any other system (gateway)? If so, can anyone point me to a post somewhere that describes this? (Also: I suppose the transport doesn't HAVE to be ssh, if ssh is too chatty.) Thanks
