Questions about bufsize en data port

In de nano gateway example there is a bufsize used of 256. Is it worth reduce this bufsize for performance/stability?

In the TTN backoffice I see a payloads size of 34 bytes in the downlink data, so my guess is reducing to 64 bytes would be ok.

What is the purpose of the data port?
