Decrease WiFi scan time of a Pycom LoPy board

This is a question for people who have experience modifying the firmware of pycom devices. I need to scan for wifi networks with particular SSIDs. I've seen devices that can scan for wifi networks many times per second. My Pycom LoPy board can do a new scan every few seconds.
I was unable to identify code in the drivers that could help me with the problem I would like to solve. I can't find the network manager or middleware code that probably contains the code I'm looking for. Can someone point me to places of interest in the repository that could help me with my task?
