Thank you. I want to use CAT-M1 (not NB-IOT) so it looks like I can leave the modem firmware as it is?

@wghirakawa The issue is that socket.connect() and SSL handshake will not timeout also in case the socket timeout is set and hang the application forever. https://forum.pycom.io/topic/3985/new-lte-firmware-releases-v1-18-1-r4-stable-1-19-0-b5-development-nb-iot-firmware-40343/45

@philwilkinson said in New LTE Firmware release v1.18.1.r3 & CAT-M1 firmware & modem updater: I have just attempted to upgrade a new module to the modem firmware. But I get the error statement, I have no idea what it refers to. any ideas? Do you know the firmware version of the modem when you started the upgrade? Which MicroPython firmware did you use? And which firmware upgrade file / method did you use to upgrade the modem?

@shedaim There is a problem in the lte.attach() API concerning parsing the response from the network. @xykon adresses this in a trial firmware build at [LINK NO LONGER AVAILABLE] Please download and install that (install from file). It may fix you problem. See also this thread around https://forum.pycom.io/topic/3549/important-update-regarding-lte-modem-updates/83

@panda With the command: lte.send_at_command('AT!="setDbgPerm full"') There is also : lte.send_at_command('AT!="Help"') which gives you the command list, and lte.send_at_command('AT!="help <command>"') e.g. lte.send_at_command('AT!="help help"') telling you, how to use help to get the list section by section. The list is quite long.

@lukesaber To compute your power requirements, if you are running a "wake up, send data, go back to sleep" pattern: define T as the duration in seconds of reference period of your choice (1 hour = 3600, 1 day = 86400...) define N as the number of times your device will wake up in that period define D as how long your device will we awake each time it wakes up (in seconds) define IA as the power consumption when awake (in mA, but you can use any unit as long as it's the same for IS and the result) define IS as the power consumption when sleeping (ditto) Then the average power consumption is: (N * D * IA + (T - N * D) * IS) / T Example: T = 3600 (1 hour) N = 3 (wakes up 3 times an hour) D = 10 (stays awake for 10 seconds) IA = 100 mA (average power consumption while awake) IS = 0.010 mA (10 µA, average power consumption while sleeping) Then the average power consumption is: (3 * 10 * 100 + (3600 - 3 * 10) * 0.010) / 3600 = 0.84325 mA If you want to have enough power for 2 days, then you need a battery with a 40 mAh capacity (0.84325 * 24 * 2). I think nearly any battery will do. Now, the exact figures for D, IA and IS can vary a lot, based on: what sensors/peripherals you may have that you need to power, and whether you power them all the time or only when you are awake what you need to do while awake how you send (LoRa, SigFox, LTE, Wi-Fi, BLE...), at what power level, at what data rate how long it takes for handshakes, ACKs, receive windows, etc. and probably a lot more things. Ignoring any sensors or other peripherals, while awake, the power consumption is usually somewhere between 50 mA (module active, not sending or receiving) and 200 mA (when sending). How long you stay awake will usually range between 3 and 10 seconds. Power consumption during deep sleep should be somewhere between 10 and 20 µA depending on the exact setup. So with 3 wake-ups per hour, for 2 days of battery life, your worst case scenario, not counting any sensors or peripherals, (200 mA when active, 10 seconds active, 20 µA in deep sleep) is about 80 mAh. You need to add the requirements for your sensors/peripherals on top of that. If you don't go to deep sleep for whatever reason, then the figures are drastically different, but you can keep the same logic. Just replace IS with the power consumption while idling.

@panda Thanks for the input. My first thought was Hologram due to lower cost to get started. Long term commitment to data plan is another issue which I am not sure of. At this point, I am going to be trying lots of different things to arrive at a configuration that works for me. In a perfect world (lots of time and money) I would try both with two different setups connecting to the same sensor network and using the same code. Since my world is far from perfect, I thought I would ask. Hearing your experience with Hologram helps... functionality is also high on the list, and it seems like it is working good for you.

@dan @Community-Moderators Has there been any update on this? The latest manual I have is LR5.1.1.0 and I cannot seem to find LR6.0.0.0 anywhere. In October @dan said Pycom was expecting an updated manual and I notice in https://github.com/pycom/pycom-micropython-sigfox/blob/master/esp32/lte/lteppp.c the library uses the command lteppp_send_at_cmd("AT!=\"setlpm airplane=1 enable=1\"", LTE_RX_TIMEOUT_MAX_MS); which does not appear in the LR5.1.1.0 manual. Could it be from the updated manual? I thought theAT! commands were manufacturer specific. If so, is there any Sequans documentations for this command? How is AT!=setlpm airplane=1 enable=1 different to AT+CFUN=4 - or is it more like AT+CFUN=2?

You'll might have issue attaching to the network again, in which case you'll have to deinit and try re-attaching. Probably won't be an issue unless you save some state to nvram. I don't understand the other part fully: Are you using all three commands to deinit the LTE modem? I think you only need lte.deinit() or the other two (although I'm looking for a definite answer to this as we speak). What do you estimate to power consumption difference to be? What power consumption/battery life do you need to achieve?

With the latest modem firmware "CATM1-38638" the connection stability has really improved. Also the data rate is better and the module is not putting off nearly as much heat. I would suggest based on my experience the modem update is a requirement.
