@burgeh As said, I did not investigate the ping-pong example further. I just used it to check, whether the devices work at all. Using the TTN gateway software was more reliable. At least messages form the node to the gateway arrive all the time. You may have a look at the non-TTN gateway example https://github.com/pycom/pycom-libraries/tree/master/examples/loraNanoGateway That one is a litte bit more elaborate and may be a better starting point. I tried it too, and it worked. The code of interest is in the respective main.py files.

@georgeeisin Sure. You may use any antenna, which matches both the chosen frequency and the impedance of 50 Ohm.

Antennas should be tuned to optimize their potential to radiate the signal you need. One of the most important measures is VSWR - http://www.antenna-theory.com/m/definitions/vswr.php - this is dependent on the frequency range you’re interested in. So your antennas - while looking the same - are (or should be) tuned to particular frequencies. If you use the wrong antenna then you “lose” a lot of the signal and your range can drastically reduce. To know for sure you need an equipment called a VNA which unfortunatelly tends to be very expensive. That’s why if your concerned you should use reputable manufacturers who provide test reports you can trust.

@seb Ok, Thank you for the prompt reply. Is there any easy way to find the know problems of a certain board and when it is sheduled to be fixed? Will there be an easy way to find the firmware file? I would be very helpfull if you could reply here if the new firmware is available and post a direct download link for the firmware file. So people who find this problem in the forum (because they might have the same issue) get the solution right away.

+1 External active antenna with LNA would be great. Other boards have this (e.g. Adafruit and NEO boards).

@duhmojo said in I might get crapped on for this, but where is basic assembly information?: pycom.io/gettingstarted Hi, Firstly I would like to thank you for your feedback. We always welcome constructive feedback and we will working on overhauling the getting started guide very soon soon. We certainly need to provide better information regarding the antennas in the getting started guide. The URL the package points to is just a heading chapter, you can then use the arrows to navigate to the next page. I admit this isn't very intuitive, this will be improved in our overhaul. To directly answer your queries: The long black antenna is for LoRa/Sigfox, the flat antenna with four fingers is for the cellular radio and you do not require to use a wifi antenna because the module has a on-board chip antenna (the beige coloured block on the bottom of the module). The pinout which can be found here: https://docs.pycom.io/chapter/datasheets/development/fipy.html details which connector is which. A guide on how to connect the module to a Expansion board, pysense or pytrack can be found here: https://docs.pycom.io/chapter/gettingstarted/unboxing.html#first There are two tabs which take you through the process step by step including a link to a guide on how to update the pytrack/pysense firmware. (this is not the same as the modules firmware).

@costelcotae it was not a real effort to do it, just a byproduct of some other testing, so I don't have much details. I believe it was just set at SF12. Of course I can't say it was reliable, I just know I saw a few such packets in logs. As far as I understand it, the gateways are outdoors, roof-mounted, with relatively large antennas (but not directional), so this may make a bit difference.

Thank you for the links, but the antenna is external (on the PyTrack) so the datasheets do not contain any info about the antenna pattern.
